Easy guide for seniors

Take your time. There is no wrong place to begin.

ChatGPT is a conversation. Type a question as you would ask a patient, helpful person—then ask another question if the answer is not clear.

Start with this

Tell ChatGPT how you would like it to help.

I am new to ChatGPT. Explain things in plain language, one step at a time. If I ask something unclear, ask me a simple question. Please do not assume I know technical terms.

Four calm steps

  1. 1

Open the genuine ChatGPT website or app.

Use chatgpt.com or the official app you installed. Be cautious of lookalike websites.

  2. 2

    Click the message box.

It is usually near the bottom of the screen. Type your question. If a microphone button is available, you may be able to speak instead.

  3. 3

Send the message and read the answer slowly.

You do not need to understand everything at once. Ask, “Can you explain that more simply?”

  4. 4

    Check anything important.

ChatGPT can be mistaken. Confirm medical, legal, financial, safety and account information with reliable sources or a qualified person.

Useful first questions

Explain a letter

“Explain this letter in plain English. Tell me what it asks me to do and list any dates. Do not guess if something is unclear.”

Plan a phone call

“Help me prepare for a phone call about [topic]. Give me five questions to ask and a space to write each answer.”

Learn a device

“Show me how to [task] on my [device]. Give only one safe step at a time and wait for me before continuing.”

Never share secrets with ChatGPT.

Do not paste passwords, security codes, full card numbers, identity documents or private medical records. ChatGPT will not telephone you demanding money, gift cards or remote access to your device.
